Most students start their Germany planning 3-4 months before the intake. That's too late. By the time they discover the APS processing time, the dMAT registration window, the blocked account timeline, and the visa appointment lead time, they've missed the intake they were aiming for.
Here's the realistic timeline, working backwards from the two main intake dates.
Target: Summer Semester 2027 (Classes Start ~April 2027)
| When | What | Why This Timeline |
|---|---|---|
| July-August 2026 | Decide on Germany. Check anabin. Confirm field classification for dMAT. | You need 7-8 months of lead time. Starting now gives you buffer for delays. |
| August 2026 | Register for dMAT (if applicable). Deadline: 15 September 2026. | First-come, first-served test centre seats. Don't wait until the deadline. |
| August-September 2026 | Take IELTS/TOEFL if needed. Start APS online registration. | Language test scores take 2-3 weeks to arrive. APS registration must be done before document submission. |
| 26 September 2026 | dMAT test date. | One shot in the first cycle. Be prepared. |
| October 2026 | dMAT results (12 October). Submit complete APS documents including dMAT certificate. | APS processing takes 4-8 weeks from submission. |
| October-November 2026 | Research universities. Shortlist 3-5 programmes. Read module handbooks. Start drafting Motivationsschreiben. | Don't wait for APS to start university research. Do both in parallel. |
| November-December 2026 | APS certificate (expected). Open blocked account. Begin university applications. | Most SS 2027 application deadlines fall in December 2026-January 2027. |
| December 2026-January 2027 | Submit university applications before deadlines. | uni-assist deadlines may be earlier than university direct deadlines. Check each university separately. |
| January-March 2027 | Wait for admission decisions. Accept offer. Complete blocked account funding (€11,904). | Don't quit your preparation while waiting. Work on German language if possible. |
| March-April 2027 | Receive admission letter. Book VFS visa appointment. Submit visa documents. | Visa appointments can be 2-4 weeks out. Book as soon as you have the admission letter. |
| April 2027 | Visa approved. Book flights. | Some universities allow late enrollment: check your specific programme. |
Target: Winter Semester 2027/28 (Classes Start ~October 2027)
| When | What |
|---|---|
| January-March 2027 | Decide. Check anabin. Check dMAT requirement. Register for next dMAT cycle (dates TBC). Take language tests. |
| March-May 2027 | APS registration and document submission. dMAT (if applicable, next cycle). |
| May-June 2027 | APS certificate. Open blocked account. University applications (most WS deadlines: May-July). |
| June-August 2027 | Admission decisions. Accept offer. Complete blocked account. |
| August-September 2027 | Visa application and appointment. |
| September-October 2027 | Visa approved. Travel. Arrive. |
The Steps That Take Longer Than Students Expect
APS processing: 4-8 weeks. Students often assume 2-3 weeks. It can take up to 8 weeks, especially if your institution is slow to respond to verification queries. Plan for 6 weeks minimum.
Blocked account setup and funding: 1-3 weeks. Opening the account with Expatrio or Fintiba takes a few days. But the international wire transfer from India can take 3-7 business days, and exchange rate processing adds time. Start this at least 3 weeks before your visa appointment.
Visa appointment slots: 2-4 weeks out. VFS appointment slots in major Indian cities fill up fast during peak season (April-August). Don't assume you can get an appointment within a week.
University application processing: 4-12 weeks. Some universities respond within a month. Others take three months. Apply early in the window, not on the deadline day.
The Students Who Miss Their Intake
In our experience, students miss their target intake for these reasons, in order of frequency:
- Started too late. Discovered APS/dMAT requirements after the timeline was already too tight.
- APS delays. Institution didn't respond to verification queries on time. Application documents were incomplete.
- Financial timing. Blocked account wasn't funded in time for the visa appointment.
- Indecision. Spent months "exploring options" without committing to action on any of them.
Every one of these is avoidable with early planning. None of them are avoidable if you start 3 months before the intake.
Start Now or Start Smart?
If you're reading this in July-September 2026 and targeting SS 2027: you're on time, but there's no buffer left. Start immediately.
If you're reading this and SS 2027 feels too rushed: target WS 2027/28 instead. Start your preparation now, and you'll have a comfortable timeline with room for delays.
If you're reading this in November-December 2026 and haven't started APS: SS 2027 is almost certainly out of reach. Plan for WS 2027/28.
The worst outcome isn't choosing a later intake. It's rushing a poorly prepared application into an earlier intake and getting rejected.
