From Winter Semester 2026/27, Germany has introduced a minimum score requirement for Indian Class XII students applying for undergraduate study. If you scored below 70% in Class XII, the direct pathway to a German university just got longer.
This is not a rumour. It's an official change to how Germany evaluates Indian school-leaving qualifications. Here's what it means.
What Changed
Previously, Indian students with a Class XII certificate from a recognised board could access German universities through various pathways without a strict percentage cutoff.
From WS 2026/27 onwards, a minimum overall score of 70% in Class XII is required to be eligible for either direct university entry (with additional qualifications) or Studienkolleg admission.
This applies regardless of whether your board is CBSE, ISC, or a State Board.
If You Have 70% or Above
You're eligible for the standard pathways:
Path A: Direct admission (subject-restricted). If you have 70%+ in Class XII AND have completed at least one year of study at a recognised Indian university, you can apply for direct admission to a German university in the same or a related subject area as your Indian degree.
Path B: Direct admission (general) via competitive exams. Qualifying scores in JEE Advanced or NEET can provide direct general admission eligibility, even without completing a year of Indian university study.
Path C: Studienkolleg. If you have 70%+ but haven't completed one year of university and don't have JEE Advanced/NEET scores, you can attend a Studienkolleg (a one-year preparatory programme in Germany) and pass the Feststellungsprüfung (assessment exam).
If You Have Below 70%
This is where the new rule hits hardest. Below 70% in Class XII, the standard pathways described above are not available under the updated evaluation criteria.
This does not mean Germany is permanently closed to you. But your options become more limited and may require longer preparation or alternative qualification routes. If you're in this situation, it's worth getting individual assessment of your specific case rather than assuming the worst.
How Percentage Is Calculated
This is a genuine confusion point across different Indian boards:
- CBSE and ISC: Percentage from marksheet is generally straightforward
- State Boards: Calculation methods vary. Some state boards use a different grading scale
- CGPA to percentage: If your marksheet shows CGPA rather than percentage, the conversion formula matters. CBSE's standard conversion (CGPA × 9.5) is commonly accepted, but verify with the specific German university or APS India how they interpret your board's grading
If your percentage is borderline (68-72%), get clarity on exactly how it will be calculated before making plans.
Does This Affect Master's Applicants?
No. The 70% Class XII rule applies to Bachelor's admission pathways and Studienkolleg entry. If you already have a Bachelor's degree and are applying for a Master's in Germany, your Class XII score is part of your APS document set but is not subject to this specific cutoff.
What Is a Studienkolleg?
For students who need it, a Studienkolleg is a one-year preparatory programme at a German institution that prepares international students for university study.
You choose a course type based on your intended university field:
- T-Kurs: Technical, engineering, science, maths
- M-Kurs: Medicine, biology, pharmacy
- W-Kurs: Business, economics, social sciences
- G-Kurs: Humanities, German studies
- S-Kurs: Languages
After completing the Studienkolleg, you take the Feststellungsprüfung. Passing it qualifies you for university admission.
Studienkolleg instruction is primarily in German: most require at least B1 German to begin.
